Westow War Memorial - Biographical Details

A. Bielby

CWGC Entry: 165468 Gunner A. Bielby, 402nd Battery Royal Field Artillery. Died 21/10/1917 aged 29 Son of the late William and Mary Bielby, of Westow Grange, Kirkham Abbey, York; husband of Gertrude Bielby, of Marton, Gainsborough, Lincs.

Buried Canada Farm Cemetery near Ypres (Ref. III. F. 20.).

In 1901 Albert Bielby, aged 13, was living at Westow Grange with his father William who was a farmer, five brothers and a sister.

Commemorated on a grave at Westow Parish Church, Albert Bielby Died 21/10/1917 aged 23years, Gunner R.F.A. – Husband of Gertrude Bielby.

T. Davison

CWGC Entry: 76535 Private Thomas Henry Davison, 20th Bn. Manchester Regiment. Died 21/10/1918 aged 18. Son of Mrs. Margaret Ann Davison, of Westow, York. Commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial near Arras (Panel 9).

In the 1901 census, aged 1, he, his mother and siblings were living with his grandfather William Bielby at Westow Grange (see A Bielby above).


W. Duff

CWGC Entry: 3309 Private William Wilfred Duff, 16th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 21/03/1918 aged 30. Son of William and Sarah Duff, of Westow, Kirkham Abbey, York. Buried Favreuil British Cemetery near Bapaume (Ref. II. F. 12.).

In the 1901 census he was a domestic page boy aged 13 and living with his father William (a tailor), his mother Sarah and sisters Edith and Amy.


C. Fletcher

Charles Fletcher was one of eight children born to Robert and Sarah Fletcher. Robert was born in Westow and Sarah [Ward] was born in Bugthorpe. Charles was born 10th November 1884. In the 1901 census when he was aged 16, he was working at Manor Farm Eddlethorpe. He emigrated to Canada (possibly sailing on 22nd February 1911).
 
3105089 Private Charles Fletcher 4th.Bn, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment) died aged 32 on Sunday 20th October 1918.and is buied in Hasnon Churchyard, Nord, France. His CWGC entry records that he was the son of Robert and Sarah Fletcher, of Westow, Yorkshire, England and husband of Blanche Fletcher of Jesup, Iowa, U.S.A.

Hon. J.C.W.S. Fuljambe (note different spelling of surname in CWGC entry and census)

CWGC Entry: Captain (Brevet Major) Foljambe, The Hon. Joclyne C. W. Savile, 1st Bn. Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Died 06/04/1916 aged 34. Commemorated on Panel 26 and 63 BASRA MEMORIAL. Son of 4th Earl of Liverpool (1st of second creation), P.C., and Countess of Liverpool.

In 1901 the family was living at Kirkham Hall. Major Foljambe was a student (‘Gentleman Cadet’) at Sandhurst Military Academy, full name given as Josceline, Charles, William Savil Foljambe, aged 18 and born in London.


W.G.W. Garforth

CWGC Entry: Lieutenant William Godfrey Willoughby Garforth, 2nd Bn. Scots Guards. Died 16/05/1915 aged 32. Son of William Henry Garforth, and the Hon. Mrs. Garforth, M.B.E., of Malton, Yorks. Buried at Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue (Ref. X. C. 12.).

The 1891 census shows him having been born in Settrington and living there with his family at Settrington House the home of his grandmother Julia Lady Middleton.

In 1901 he was at Charterhouse school, Godalming, Surrey. His School record reads:

b 10 Feb 1883; only s of William Henry G of Westow Hall, York; (Girdlestoneites); Cricket XI, 1901; Entered Long Quarter 1898; left Cricket Quarter 1901. Yorkshire Agricultural College, Leeds - Land Agent for Leopold de Rothschild, Esq. C.V.O.
W.G.W.Garforth Esq., Burcott ,Leighton Buzzard

Lt. Garforth's name is also on the memorial at Wing in Buckinghamshire. In the Kelly's Directory for Bucks in 1915, he was living at Burcott (near Wing) and was described as the Estate Agent to Leopold de Rothschild Esq (who lived at Ascott House near Wing). There was also a reference to his death in the Bucks Advertiser and Aylesbury News on 12 Jun 1915.

S. Grice

CWGC Entry: 42073 Private Sunley Grice, 2nd Bn. Worcestershire Regiment. Died 17/04/1918 aged 26. Son of Mrs. Mary Ann Simpson, of Westow, York. Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial near Ypres (Panel 5).

In the 1901 census he was aged 9 and living with his widowed mother, grandmother and three sisters in Westow.

There is also an entry for him in the Worcestershire Regiments own Roll of Honour (note that here his regimental number is shown as 42973.
 
There is also an entry for him in the records of the Wolds Wagomers Special Reserve based at Sledmere, as follows:

Wagoner 27 Sunley Grice: Age 21 - Height 5ft 41/2 ins - Weight 140 lbs - Eyes Blue - Hair Fair - Occupation Carter - Parish of Birth Westow - Attested 17/2/1913 at Wharram-Le-Street - Later 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regt. Reported missing 17th April 1917.

 E. H. Haykings

CWGC Entry: 21922 Private Ernest Henry Haykings, 8th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment. Died 18/08/1916 aged 30. Son of Isaac and Sarah Jane Haykings. Buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 2 near Albert (Ref. XXXIV. L. 11.).

In the 1901 census (under the surname Haykins) he was 17 and an apprentice whitesmith living in Malton with his father Isaac (a gardener), mother and five brothers and sisters.

J.F. Langhorn

CWGC Entry: 36031 Private J I Langhorn, 14th Bn. Cheshire Regiment. Died 27/03/1916 aged 30. Son of Lancelot Langhorn and the late Elizabeth Langhorn, of Southview, Westow, York. Born at Brampton, Croft Ends, Appleby, Westmorland. Buried in Whitchurch Cemetry, Shropshire (Ref. 147).

In the 1901 census John B Langhorn was aged 13 and living in Heversham, Westmoreland with his father Lancelot (a coachman and domestic gardener) and sister. His father is buried at Westow Church.

G.B. Masterman

Probable CWGC Entry: 28476 Lance Corporal George B Masterman, 8th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment. Died 26/09/1917. Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial near Ypres (Panel 47 to 48 and 163A.). There are no family details to confirm.

A possible 1901 census entry is for the Masterman family living at Carthagena Farm in Menethorpe. The father, John was a farm worker and the family includes mother Elizabeth and seven children including George who was 12 and John who was 1.

J.J. Masterman

Probable CWGC Entry: 76568 Private J.J. Masterman, 12th Bn. Manchester Regiment. Died 12/10/1918. Buried at Neuvilly Communal Cemetery Extension near Le Cateau (Ref. B. 18.). There are no family details to confirm.

C. Richman

CWGC Entry: 67678 Lance Serjeant Charles Richman, 208th Bn. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 27/11/1917 aged 25. Son of Waters and Lily Richman, of Ivy Cottage, Menethorpe, Malton, Yorks. Native of Scrayingham, Stamford Bridge, York. Buried at Anneux British Cemetery near Cambrai (Ref. I. F. 7.).

In the 1901 census he was 8 and living in Howsham with his father Waters ( a coachman/groom), mother, brother and two sisters.

J.T. Roberts

CWGC Entry: Second Lieutenant James Thursby Roberts, 2nd Bn. The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Died 20/07/1916 aged 20. Son of Maj. H. H. Roberts, of Westow Croft, Kirkham Abbey, York. Buried in Netley Military Cemetery Hampshire (Ref Officers'. 1818.).

There is no obvious entry in 1901 census.

B. Snowball

Probable CWGC entry: 2310 Corporal B Snowball, 5th Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Died 09/05/1915. Buried at Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery, Fleurbaix near Armentieres (ref. F. 11.). There are no family details to confirm.

In 1901 census Bertie Snowball, aged 13, was living with his Father James (a farm bailiff), mother Elizabeth and 5 brothers and sisters in Baildon. James and Elizabeth are buried at Westow Church.

L. Duck

Ordinary Seaman Leslie (Smith) Duck P/JX 275110, H.M.S. Hollyhock, Royal Navy. Lost when his ship was bombed and sunk east of Ceylon on 9th April 1942. Aged 33. Son of Thomas and Mary Alice Duck, of Westow, Yorkshire. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 65, Column 3.

E. Lee

Sapper E Lee 11004032, Royal Engineers. Died of wounds 11th January 1947. Aged 42. Son of Albert and Mary Lee; husband of Margaret Annie Lee, of Burnholme, York. Buried in ST. MARY CHURCHYARD, WESTOW, Yorkshire.

M. Thistleton

Guardsman Mark Thistleton 14693730, 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards. Died 22nd September 1944 aged 19 during Operation Market Garden (Arnhem). Son of Mark and Eliza Thistleton, of Firby, Whitwell, Yorkshire. Buried in ARNHEM OOSTERBEEK WAR CEMETERY, Gelderland, Netherlands. Plot 11. Row C. Grave 1.
