A Terrier of the Parish of Westow in the County and Diocese of York made in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty one, and first of the Translation of Charles Thomas Archbishop of York.

1. The Church is dedicated to Saint Mary and situated towards the North of the Village of Westow and about half a mile distant. It consists of Tower, Nave and Chancel, all of which except the Tower are in bad repair. The whole seems to have been erected in the fifteenth century. Except the font, a representation of the Crucifixion, and remains of Windows in the north wall, which are of Norman workmanship. There is also a Gallery in the West End of the nave erected in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty one. The roof is flat made of Oak Timber and covered with Lead. The pews of the Nave are made of oak painted white. Those in the Gallery and Chancel are made of Deal.

Church Accommodation 286. Length of nave 50 feet. Breadth 20 feet. Length of Chancel 30 feet. Breadth seventeen feet. Length of Tower 12 feet. Breadth eight feet. Height 60 feet. The Tower contains three Bells.

2. Churchyard containing 2a 3r 21p. Boundaries. North by Lands belonging to Mrs Thomas Wells. South by Cobb’s ?. East by Thomas Ward and Mary Wilson. West by Cobb’s ? It is fenced by the parish viz, North side by the Township of Menethorpe, South by the Township of Westow. East by the Township of Eddlethorpe, and West by the Township of Firby. All the fences are of Luckwood excepting the one belonging to Westow which is Stone. There is a stable in the Churchyard for the accommodation of the Parish.

3. Parsonage House containing two front Rooms, Kitchen and Scullery, Lodging Rooms over them and garrets above the front Rooms. Built of Stone Timbers tolerably good and tiled. The outbuildings are Gig-house, Stable and other offices. Area of the Premises and gardens 2r 9p. The Boundaries are North Cobb’s ? South a small piece of Garden belonging to the Vicar and the street of Westow. East a lane is said to belong to the Vicar. West Joshua Field Esquire. All the Fences except the South end of the west wall belong to the Vicar. Towards the North they are Luckwood, and towards the South Stone.

4. The Glebe Lands one containing 32 a 3r 16p the other 4a 2r 5p The Boundaries are To the North and west E. C. Taylor Esquire and Firby Lane. To the South and East E. C. Taylor Esquire, Mt Whimp of York and a field belonging to the Iron Stone Company. The Vicar has no fence excepting the one adjoining Firby Lane and that has long been a source of contention between the owners of Firby and the Vicar of Westow. The matter is now under investigation. The fields are numbered on the Plan 37, 38 and 41 (commonly called Bluds) and contain 5a 0 7p, 3a 3r 3p, 2a 1r 10p respectively and are adjacent. Boundaries North Firby Lane, South E. C. Taylor Esquire., East Malton Road, West E. C. Taylor Esq.. The Vicar fences are the South and east and the east end of the North. E. C. Taylor fences part of the North and all the West. (note added by R. Richer 10/5/1874 - The West fence belongs to the Vicar)

The Fields numbered 39 & 40 (commonly called Westow Moor) contain 3a 1r 4p and 4a 2r 1p respectively.

Boundaries North and West E. C. TaylorEsq. East Joshua Field Esq. South Firby Lane. The only fence belonging to the Vicar is that against Firby Lane.

All the above mentioned fields are in the Township of Firby.

Holbeck Close containing 3a 3r 6p. Boundaries North a Stream called Holbeck. South Malton Road. West Joshua Field Esq. East ? of Nathan Harper. Te Vicar owns all the fences except that against the ? of Nathan Harper.

The whole of the above Glebe Lands are arable, except a very small portion against Holbeck Stream.

Adjacent to number 41 is a small plantation, number 42 on the plan, and containing 18 perches. This put down in the Vicar’s name but claimed by Joshua Field esq. It is reported to have been taken from the Highway some time since

5. Tythes. The Great ones belong to the See of York and are leased to George Saville Foljambe Esq. of Osberton? Hall Worksop. Commuted Value £567/15/0. The Small ones belong to the Vicar. Commuted value £113/0/0. For particulars see Copy already referred to. The Mortuaries etc. are included in the Vicar’s Rent Charge.

6. Augmentation The Lessee of the Great Tythes pays annually to the Vicar £20/0/0 which has been done from time immemorial.
The Clerk’s Salary is £8 per annum and is paid by the Parish.
